The Cairns harbour houses a fleet that contains some quite awesome dive boats. The most recent member of the fleet is the Seastar, recently brought out this last week.

This excellent good-looking brand new ship is 80 ft long, and can make the journey out there to Seastar’s dive sites in under an hour. The vessel is undoubtedly swift and stable, together with lots of shaded and air-conditioned interior room.

Seastar Cruises has generally prided themselves on supplying an incredibly unique as well as individual get-away, and they happen to be modifying the locations to help enhance the smaller group adventure which these people have always delivered.

Our staff members like the main very simple fact that the managers cap the levels onboard to just forty people, extremely well beneath the actual full capacity of the particular boat; this means there is certainly lots of space on board. With the help of a faster vessel they may leave a bit less early on, but still always be the very first charter boat to go to see Michaelmas Cay, and so snorkelers as well as birdwatchers have it just about all to themselves. This kind of tour will be the A-list escape designed for birdwatchers that would like to mix an outstanding reef cruise with an an opportunity to witness exotic seabird species.

Your speedier trip out there also means that considerably more precious time can be spent on Michaelmas Cay as well as Seastar’s other diving mooring found on Hastings Reef; visitors may currently spend in excess of 5 hrs out there on the ocean.

And finally, whenever the Japanese people restart the annual fall/winter research whale hunt, they can be expecting the many fans as well as protectors of Migaloo to be protesting the actual research. While the Japanese offer to actually resume commercialized whaling had been knocked back, for the 1st time in a good many years the controversial clinical exploration will probably incorporate the taking of fifty Humpback whales, therefore Migaloo is going to be at an increased risk as soon as the guy visits Antarctic seas the following springtime and summer. The important decisions, sacrifices, as well as organizing still has yet to come, however many of us continue to be optimists with regards to protection of the reef.

Compared to the past few years good advances have been made to care for the reef, by way of a coordinated administration system which looks at pursuits both on the reef including commercial fishing and tourisms, as well as nearby seaside lands. A Cape York Adventure

Departing civilisation behind at Cairns, we ventured along the Peninsula Developmental Road. This further descended right into a deep corrugated track which wound along the way of the telegraph line, between giant rainforest trees and also across innumerable rivers up to the little Aboriginal area of Bamaga on Cape York. “The Entrance to HELL — go back if possible”, stated an encouraging handpainted sign once we headed off into the true wilderness!

River crossings of all manner and form punctuated the journey — with axle-deep red dirt, decrepit handmade bridges (your odd log missing occasionally to add to the challenge), deep sand or fast flowing water to keep you alert. It was a vintage four wheel drive adventure. The biggest challenge, however, was the crossing of the Jardine River.

Even in the drier times of year, the Jardine River, just 35 km to the south of Bamaga, was a wide, not too deep, quick-flowing river. In 1985, the luxury of a tiny car punt had just become open to carry the vehicles owned by the less adventurous across this famous barrier for the princely sum of $15. Many heated battles then erupted about the banks of the Jardine while cautious wives and thrill-seeking partners debated the relative merits in the challenging river crossing plus the tame punt ride. As newlyweds, we too had each of our dispute here, but in our case it absolutely was the thrill-seeking wife whom desired the river experience!

To drive across a river this way requires substantial preparation. A diesel motor such as ours requires a prolonged air snorkel to bring in air from well over any possible water level. Tyres must be deflated, waterproof covers packed around the engine and openings including fuel tanks and doors have to be securely sealed. We watched with interest as many vehicles attempted the crossing — and a lot failed, becoming stranded mid-river with the waters swirling round the driver’s feet and camping gear floating at the rear of the vehicle!

Finally the thrill-seeking better half prevailed. A group of fellow Cape York drivers came to our assistance and loaned us a snorkel and also covers which fitted our vehicle. So with our vehicle trussed up just like a Christmas lunch, we drove down in to the swirling waters of the heaving Jardine.

Across the river we drove, pushing a significant bow-wave just before us. Steve said it felt so great he wanted to change direction and keep driving in the river! Then through a heart-stopping very deep hole at the end and up the steep bank we drove, masters of the Jardine. I bet they don’t have this much fun when doing one of the organised Cape York Tours.

Our dripping vehicle on the other side seemed little the worse for the adventure. However, it cost us more to change the differential oils which had become waterlogged compared to little punt ride could have cost. So sanity prevailed upon our return journey 30 days later and the Landcruiser required a dry ride across the Jardine on the ferry!

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the natural wonders of the world running from the northern tip of the continent to just north of Brisbane. The great barrier reef stretches over 1600 miles along the east coast.

The reef is home to well over 1000 fish varieties, whales, dugongs. An impressive amount of seabirds live there.

The coral which forms the reef itself is also a living creature, made up of thousands of miniscule coral polyps. When it dies it turns light grey, and forms the structure for more coral growth. The different species of coral grow at different speeds, while some are quite fast growing, some varieties take well over a hundred years to mature. The colours are not because of the coral but by the growth of algae on it.

The reef lives in a tropical climate relying on warm nutrient rich water to survive. Salty water and plenty of light is needed to maintain the health of the coral.

With hundreds of thousands of square miles of reef it is a diving and snorkelling paradise. Lots of quality diving tours are available from the towns up and down the east coast. Even if you don’t go in the ocean you can see the wonders of the reefs wonders through reef viewing tours.

Tuesday , 21st September, and what a stunning Queensland day to go to the Reef… and what a good decision to try “Reef Quest“, from Cairns which gave us an absolutely unforgettable day at the barrier reef.
After flying from Melbourne the previous day I was looking forward to some balmy weather. It was a bit chillier than I’d imagined and I was glad I had brought along Jeans and a jumper!
I’ve been visiting Cairns for about 12 years and have been out on my share of Reef Trips and let’s face it, they all do just about the same thing: 2 different snorkelling spots, snorkelling gear, lunch and afternoon tea – so it’s the service and little extras that make the difference.

From the moment you check in to the moment you disembark, the service and crew are impressive. The crew to passenger ratio is high, as there was always someone around to help with any queries or requests. The crew seem genuinely content and their service and attention were really good.

Reef Quest issue a wetsuit for free which is usually an extra (usually $5.00 hire) on other tours. As a snorkeller a wetsuit gives you a little protection from the harsh sun and also buoyancy which makes snorkelling easier for beginners.

Reef Quest have a selection of 16 different scuba diving sites and choose the best 2 reefs based on the winds and tides. A guided snorkelling option is also available at both reefs and this is a real plus for first time snorkelers or anyone wanting to find out a little bit more about the reef’s ecosystems. The snorkel guide dives down and picks up things like sea cucumbers and shells and brings them up so people can have a closer look. They also know where all the nemo fish are, so it does add a bit to the snorkelling experience.

The meal was good with lots of variety including pasta salad, bean salad, green salad, tropical fruits, cold meats, bread rolls and prawns. There was tea and coffee and cold water available all day.

All in all it was a top quality day out.

Well, I Recently Bought A Kayak

Nine years after being employed by a sea kayak touring and sales company I’ve finally got around to aquiring myself one. I have spent the last six years paddling the areas rivers in an older style white water kayak, but this just wasn’t suitable for the coastal zones.
This was getting extremely frustrating as I live 200 yards from the beach at Clifton Beach, a coastal suburb just north of Cairns .
I’d already explored the Russell River numerous times, the Upper Barron River was getting a bit boring also, so I had to get into that ocean.
As Cairns is a small country center the purchase of a seakayak and the assorted accessories is not the most simple task. You can either go with Ebay, wait for someone to sell it secondhand or just work with what you can find local.
Thats what I did. I made the most of what I could find, with the notion of then turning it into what I needed. I found a fairly affordable chinease made boat brand new. Now I knew that the fittings would be cheap, I also knew it probably wouldn’t be 100% watertight. Luckily I was enjoyably surprised.
The only fittings that will need changing are the elastic cord deck ropes and elastic cord steering lines. I may substitute the inner steering lines with stainless wire as needs be.
As for kitting out the kayak with emergency gear my list is as follows
* V Flag for attratring attention
* Emergency tool containing whistle, mini compass, match striker, signalling mirror and small watertight storage for matches.
* Distress flares
* surplus paddle (cut into 3 sections for storage)
* Another signalling mirror ( I don’t desire only having one of anything that sinks)
* 3 x 1.5 liter containers of water
* 6 snap flouro glow sticks
* compact 1st aid kit
* thermal blanket

I already own some nautical charts as I’m a sailer, but I figure I’ll just copy relevant sections and laminate the smaller sheets. I have a compass ready to be fitted.

The expeditions I have planned in the immediate future to test everything out are Green Island, Fitzroy Island for the Fitzroy Island New Years Eve Party, Low Isles Dunk Island and Snapper Island.

In the future I plan to do the Hinchinbrook channel and paddle all the way the island. This is all leading up to the big expedition of Great Barrier Reef. I can fit approximately 100 pounds of camping gear and supplies without becoming too unseaworthy, so this should get me where I want to go. And I can sometimes tow a trolling line to replace my regular freeze dried diet with some fresh fish. I’ll also be stopping and camping so the barramundi gear will get a good work out too.
